                                                                               Our Mission
The mission of the United Church of Newport is to celebrate the love of God:
  • By learning and teaching the way of Christ.
  • By encouraging one another in the sharing of our talents and resources.
  • By walking together in service with our neighbors, our community, and our world.
  • We engage in significant service to our community.
  • We welcome visitors and newcomers.
  • Within our fellowship, there are different interpretations of faith and scripture, but we all believe that Jesus Chris has called us to work, witness, and worship together.
                          Our History
The United Church of Newport is rooted in two historic Protestant traditions, and began as two
separate churches.
The Congregational Church was founded in 1831 as an offshoot of the Coventry Congregational Church.  The original sites of worships were on the Lake Road, and the corner of School and Main Streets in Newport.
The Methodist Church was founded in 1863, following the organization of a Methodist Society in 1856.  The building where we now worship was originally a wooden frame structure.  In 1913, the building was faced with brick and extended to include the tower.
In 1958, the two congregations formally federated to become the United Church of Newport.  Following a tragic fire that destroyed the Congregational Church, it was decided to use the Methodist Church building, and add an educational wing.
An elevator was installed in 1995, making the church handicap accessible.  In 1998, a mission statement was adopted, and in 1999 membership was consolidated onto a unified roll.   With members counted as belonging to both parent denominations.
Handbells were purchased in 2000 and chimes in 2009.

Ministers are alternated between Methodist and Congregational denominations.
These have been eventful and God-directed years as the United Church continues to serve the community and fulfill the spiritual need of its members and friends.
